Is the Ākhirah Our Side Hustle?

Is the Ākhirah Our Side Hustle?

Saturday, July 25, 2026

"Rather, you prefer the life of this world, while the Hereafter is better and more lasting."(Qur'an 87:16-17)

We live in a generation obsessed with the next promotion, the next investment, the next business opportunity, the next qualification, and the next financial milestone.

We are taught from a young age to build careers, accumulate wealth, secure our retirement, and leave behind an inheritance. There is nothing inherently wrong with any of this. Islam encourages us to earn a lawful living, provide for our families, and strive for excellence.

But somewhere along the journey, many of us unknowingly reverse our priorities.

The dunya becomes our full-time occupation.

The Ākhirah becomes our side hustle.

Think about it.

We wake up before sunrise for work, but struggle to wake for Fajr.

We spend eight to ten hours each day building someone else's company or our own business, yet finding thirty minutes to recite the Qur'an feels like a burden.

We dedicate years to gaining qualifications that may benefit us for a few decades, yet invest very little in the knowledge that will benefit us for eternity.

Our calendars are filled with meetings, deadlines, and appointments. Yet our relationship with Allah is often squeezed into whatever time remain (if any time remains at all).

If someone examined our daily schedule without knowing anything about us, would they conclude that we truly believe in the Hereafter?

That is an uncomfortable question.

Allah ﷻ repeatedly reminds us that this worldly life is temporary:

"The life of this world is nothing but amusement and diversion, but the Home of the Hereafter is best for those who are conscious of Allah. Will you not then understand?"(Qur'an 6:32)

Notice that Allah does not say the dunya has no value. Rather, Allah ﷻ teaches us its correct place. It is a means, not the destination. A bridge, not the homeland.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ beautifully captured this reality when he said:

"Be in this world as though you were a stranger or a traveller."(Sahih al-Bukhari)

A traveller does not decorate the airport lounge. He is focused on reaching his destination.

Yet many of us have become so busy decorating the waiting room that we have forgotten about the journey itself.

The irony is striking.

We work tirelessly to purchase homes we will eventually leave behind.

We spend fortunes renovating properties that someone else will inherit.

We sacrifice our health, our sleep, and sometimes even our families for possessions that cannot accompany us into the grave.

Yet how much effort are we investing in building our home in Jannah?

Every charity, every sincere du'ā, every page of Qur'an, every act of kindness, every moment of patience, every lesson taught, every person guided towards Allah is another brick being laid in our eternal home.

The frightening reality is not that we neglect good deeds altogether.

The frightening reality is that we often treat them as optional extras.

If time permits, we attend the masjid.

If we are not too tired, we read Qur'an.

If work is not too busy, we volunteer.

If there is money left over, we give charity.

If there is nothing else planned, we attend the Islamic programme.

The Ākhirah is fitted around our dunya.

But Allah never intended it to be this way.

The Companions رضي الله عنهم worked, traded, married, and lived productive lives. Yet every worldly activity revolved around pleasing Allah. The dunya remained in their hands, never in their hearts.

Perhaps that is the question each of us needs to ask today:

If someone looked only at my priorities, would they conclude that I truly believe I am going to stand before Allah?

Because our schedules reveal our priorities.

Our priorities reveal our hearts.

And our hearts reveal what we truly believe.

This is not a call to abandon our careers, businesses, or responsibilities. Islam never asks us to neglect the dunya. Rather, it teaches us to put it in its proper place.

Earn your living.

Build your business.

Study hard.

Provide for your family.

But never allow your temporary life to consume your eternal one.

One day, every deadline will end.

Every salary will stop.

Every title will disappear.

Every possession will remain behind.

Only our deeds will continue with us.

So work hard for this world...but work even harder for the next.

Do not make the Ākhirah your side hustle. Make it your life's greatest investment.

"Whoever desires the harvest of the Hereafter, We increase him in his harvest. And whoever desires the harvest of this world, We give him thereof, but he will have no share in the Hereafter." (Qur'an 42:20)

May Allah ﷻ make the Ākhirah the greatest concern of our hearts, place the dunya in our hands and not in our hearts, and grant us the ability to invest every day in that which will benefit us when we stand before Him. Āmīn
