When the World Received Its Greatest Mercy ﷺ
By Mufti Mohammed Raees Dawood
Rabi‘ul-Awwal is not merely another month in the Islamic calendar. It is a month that reminds the Ummah of one of the greatest blessings Allah سبحانه وتعالى bestowed upon humanity: the arrival of Sayyiduna Muhammad ﷺ.
Allah سبحانه وتعالى says:
وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَاكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةً لِّلْعَالَمِينَ
“And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.”
(Surah al-Ambiya 21:107)
Think about the words “a mercy to the worlds.”
His ﷺ coming was not a blessing limited to one nation, one tribe or one generation. His message brought guidance, mercy and light to humanity.
A Birth Worth Remembering
The birth of Rasulullah ﷺ was the beginning of an extraordinary chapter in human history.
He ﷺ came into a world that was deeply immersed in ignorance. Through him ﷺ, Allah سبحانه وتعالى brought people from darkness towards light, from disbelief towards Iman, and from oppression towards justice.
And what makes his blessed birth even more remarkable is that Rasulullah ﷺ himself acknowledged the significance of the day on which he was born.
Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah رضي الله عنه narrates that Rasulullah ﷺ was asked about fasting on Monday. He ﷺ replied:
“That is the day on which I was born and the day on which revelation was sent down to me.”
This narration is recorded in Sahih Muslim.
There is something beautiful in this.
Rasulullah ﷺ connected Monday with the blessing of his birth.
What Does Rabi‘ul-Awwal Mean for Us?
Rabi‘ul-Awwal should therefore be a month in which our love for Rasulullah ﷺ increases.
We should increase our Salawat and Salaam.
We should read and teach the Seerah.
We should remind our children who Rasulullah ﷺ was and why he is the most beloved of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.
We should feed the poor, give charity, spread happiness and, most importantly, bring the Sunnah of Rasulullah ﷺ into our lives.
Because loving Rasulullah ﷺ is not merely something we say with our tongues.
True love should be visible in our actions.
If we claim to love him ﷺ, then our Salah should improve.
Our character should improve.
Our treatment of our parents should improve.
Our dealings with people should improve.
Our attachment to the Sunnah should become stronger.
More Than a Celebration
Rabi‘ul-Awwal should not simply come and go with lights, decorations and gatherings.
Those things may create an atmosphere of happiness, but the greater purpose is to remember the one whose arrival brought light to the world.
The greatest Meelad is one that leaves us with a greater love for Rasulullah ﷺ and a greater commitment to following his blessed Sunnah.
So as Rabi‘ul-Awwal arrives, let us ask ourselves:
How much do I truly know about Rasulullah ﷺ?
How much Salawat do I send upon him ﷺ?
How closely do I follow his Sunnah?
And most importantly:
Can someone see the character of Rasulullah ﷺ reflected in my character?
May Allah سبحانه وتعالى allow us to spend Rabi‘ul-Awwal increasing our love for His Beloved ﷺ, learning his Seerah, following his Sunnah and sending abundant Salawat and Salaam upon him.
اللهم صل وسلم وبارك على سيدنا محمد وعلى آله وصحبه أجمعين ﷺ
May our love for Rasulullah ﷺ not be confined to Rabi‘ul-Awwal, but remain with us throughout our lives.
Rabi‘ul-Awwal is the month of remembering the arrival of mercy — and our greatest response should be gratitude, love and obedience.
